Growing up, my sister and I spent a lot of nights playing scrabble and monopoly. That’s what happens when you don’t have cable tv. I think my mom (bless her soul) was a big fan of board games. So when I came across this Monopoly board game at a friend’s garage sale, I thought it was high time I let my 5 year old learn about the workings of currency and how to go about buying and renting property – in the “funnest” way possible.
This new version of monopoly is simpler, utilizing a little monopoly man on a car that gives out instructions of the game. All you need to do is press on its tiny head and he will tell you what to do when you land on a spot. While most 90’s kid Monopoly players like me miss Jail time and Boardwalk, this version works for the little ones. As it says on the box, children as early as 4 years old can enjoy the game.
Each stop at a property means that it becomes tours after little Monopoly Man tells you to pay the Banker. Every stop at the same property after that and you can add stories or eventually, get the golden roof, which is one of the criteria for winning.
Another criteria for winning is when all the properties are “sold”, the player who has the most number of properties wins.
The game ended quickly since there were only a few spots to purchase. I can imagine if there were more than 2 players, a game might finish in less than 30 minutes. Little monopoly man was interactive and engaging enough that my 6 year old finished the whole game with enthusiasm.
My daughter enjoyed Monopoly and was keen on keeping her “money” and not “spending”it most of the time. I think she liked this better than Snakes and Ladders.
This will be THE First game night for us and I hope we get to have more game nights very soon.
